Are there any documents I have to provide to work legally in Vietnam?

Work permits are required for all foreigners to legally work in Vietnam and in order to renew any work/business related visas. They are required for all teachers. In order to obtain a work permit the school has to submit an application on your behalf that includes notarised copies of your original:

  • University degree (BA or higher; if you have more than one qualification only one certificate is needed);
  • TEFL certificate or higher certification in EFL/ESL (again we only need one);
  • Police Clearance Certificate/ Criminal Record Search (PCC/ CRS) from the relevant agency in the home country of the applicant. In addition to this, an application for a work permit must include a health check certificate (organized by the company where you will work) and other documents that will allow the applicant to get their legal status in Vietnam approved.

Will the school help with, and pay for, a visa?

If you are offered a position and accept Global Choices will apply for a 6 month multiple-entry extendable business visa on your behalf and reimburse you the cost of the visa, which is usually $110 US. However we need you to provide us with a receipt for the visa in order to be reimbursed.

What should I pack to take with me?

You won’t have to pack much as almost anything you could want is available in Ho Chi Minh City. Review the above dress code and pack a suitable amount of work clothes to at least get you through the first few weeks; the same goes for casual wear, keeping in mind that you won’t need much cold weather wear, if any, while in the south of Vietnam and that the country is home to a large textile and garment industry, which makes brand name clothes – Levis, Adidas, Fila - for export and purchase locally; there are also numerous tailors.

How often and in what way will I be paid?

All salaries are paid directly in to staff members and teachers’ accounts at SHINHAN VINA Bank. Pay day is the 10th of each month. Payment covers all work completed in the previous month. Salaries are normally paid by 2pm on payday.

What if I decide to stay past my initial contract?

You can easily extend your contract or sign a new one. We’ll help with all necessary visas and work permits.
